Troubleshoot dialing from Outlook
Microsoft Outlook won't dial the phone number
- Make sure you are using a traditional (such as a 28.8 Kbps or 56 Kbps) modem.
- If you use an external modem, make sure your communications port and modem are connected by a cable and that your modem is plugged into the phone jack, and then try the call again.
- Make sure the communications port is set up properly. On the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call. Click Dialing Options, click Line Properties, and then check the setup options selected.
- Make sure the location you are dialing from is set up properly and that dialing instructions, such as dialing 9 for an outside line, are specified. On the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call. Click Dialing Properties, click the location you are dialing from, and then click Edit to check the dialing options and instructions selected for that location.
International phone number
- Make sure the phone number you're dialing is in international format.
- The call may have been canceled before it went through. Try increasing the amount of time before the call is canceled. On the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call. Click Dialing Options, click Line Properties, and then check the options selected under Call preferences on the Connection tab.
- Did you include the international access code, such as 011 in the United States? Use the following format for the phone number: +country code (area code) number.
I get a message from the operator
- Do you get a message to first dial "1" and then the area code? If so, go back to where you typed the phone number, and add a "1" and the area code.
- Do you use a calling card? If not, make sure a calling card is not specified in your settings.
- Click Contacts, and then on the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call.
- Click Dialing Properties, click an entry, and then click Edit.
- Click the Calling Card tab, and then in the list, click None.

- Click the Area Code Rules tab, and then click New to define area code rules.

The automatic phone dialer didn't dial my number correctly
- If the phone number is an international number, make sure it's entered in the correct format:
+country code (area code) local number
For example, the international format for a typical United States number would be:
+1 (425) 555-0112
- Make sure the location you are dialing from is set up properly and that dialing instructions, such as dialing 9 for an outside line, are specified. On the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call. Click Dialing Properties, click the location you are dialing from, and then click Edit to check the dialing options and instructions selected for that location.
- Letters are not recognized by the automatic phone dialer. Change the letters to the appropriate numbers.
- If you include letters after the phone number— for example, "ext. 1234"— the automatic phone dialer stops dialing when it reaches the letters.
Other common Internet connection problems
- Most Internet addresses and connection settings are case-sensitive. Make sure settings are capitalized correctly.
- If you receive an error when you try to send or receive messages, confirm your Internet e-mail account settings. You may have entered a (DNS) server address or a news server address instead of the e-mail server address. A common format for mail servers includes adding "mail" before your ISP domain name. While servers such as mail.example.com are common, there are many variations. Your Internet service provider (ISP) can provide you with the correct address.
